Joint Admission Board (JAB) has said a big no to a proposal by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
The proposal was meant for providing more attempts to SC and ST students in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE), held by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). The move has been taken taking into account the special preferences, which are already being offered to SC/ST students for admission to the elite institutes.
Being the highest body to decide on IIT-JEE, JAB is of the opinion that all students are provided two attempts to crack IIT-JEE.
An IIT Director was quoted as saying, "We need to maintain the status quo. The JAB thought that what is given to SCs/STs is sufficient."
The members at the JAB said SC/ST students are already being provided with separate merit list along with relaxed cut-off. Besides, the SC/ST students are also imparted with preparatory classes. As to their level of competence, they are not at par with that of the general students.
