Referring to Holy Scriptures speakers in a students rally at Mangalore emphasized that there is no religious sanction for acceptance of profit for dissemination of knowledge. Protesting against commercialization of higher education, students called for an end to donation and capitation fees system in the colleges.
Organized by the Student Islamic Organisation of Mangalore (SIO) the rally attracted 300 students. The rally culminated at the Deputy Commissioner's office where the students held sit-in.
The student leaders demanded that the government should withhold licences of the institutions which demand offer donation in return for seats. Attributing the high cost of education to the educational backwardness among minorities and other underprivileged sections, the speakers called for equitable distribution of education.
