Tamil Nadu higher education minister Dr K Ponmudy announced status quo in the fees structure for engineering courses in the state in the year 2009-10. The colleges will charge Rs 32,500 for seats from government quota and for management quota, the amount will be Rs 65,500.

The Balasubramaniam Committee was constituted by the All India Council for Technological Education (AICTE) to suggest fee structure in the engineering colleges.

This move was necessitated in the wake of the campaign by self-financing colleges consortium for raising the amount of fees to be collected from students securing seats from government quota. They said with the amount collected they could be able to meet the teacher’s demand to implement VI Pay Commission.

In its report submitted to the Higher Education Department the committee recommended for status quo in the the present pattern.

Earlier, complaints of collection of exorbitant fee and capitation fee against the engineering colleges had prompted the state government to appoint a committee to conduct raids on such colleges.

The committee is due to release its findings on the Assembly floor on June 23.
