The Yashpal Committee on higher education is all set to submit its report to the Central Government.
Appointed by the Union Human Resources Development Ministry, the panel is supposed to suggest ways to revamp higher education in the best interest of the country. In this context, the panel wants the government to divest academic powers of the professional bodies such as All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and Medical Council of India (MCI). It wants functions of the bodies to be curtailed and their role confined to certification of professionals.
In their place, according to the panel, universities must be accountable for professional courses and their content. The committee will advise the Centre to constitute a ‘commission for higher education’.
Chairman of the panel Yashpal assured on Thursday that the final report would be tabled within two-three weeks.
