DU will have a new branch to conduct admissions

The Delhi University is likely to have a new branch to conduct admissions 2017-18. While to look after admissions all major universities have a dedicated branch, but DU never had an exclusive admission branch.

Headed by the dean of students’ welfare the admission process in DU has been under a committee. The new branch will be headed by a dean of admissions, which will look into all admission-related issues. The whole process of admissions at DU takes nearly four months and it is one of the major processes. This year, due to the many changes introduced like the centralised application process, the admissions have been one of the longest.

According to TOI reports, vice-chancellor of DU, Yogesh Tyagi said,”In all, DU received around 7.5 lakh applications, which is cumulative for all the admissions conducted by the university this year.”

“Making the system completely online has been my first effort to make it transparent and fair. There might have been some technical issues, but we have conducted a fair admission process. Centralised trials for sports and ECA are some of the other efforts. But, a lot more needs to be done and we are planning for that,” Tyagi added.

Tyagi said that a separate branch is under pipeline as for admissions to more than 60 colleges and a total of 1.9 lakh students there is no dedicated admission branch.

“We are planning an admission branch. It will be headed by a dean and all admissions in DU will come under its ambit,” he added,

“How soon it will be functional I can’t say right now, as we will have to consult all the stakeholders in creating it and then we will need approvals from the statutory bodies. But hopefully we will be able to set it up by the time 2017-18 undergraduate and postgraduate admissions take place,” he added.

Around 60,000 students are admitted at undergraduate level annually, while another 10,000 are admitted at postgraduate level.
