Along with the MBBScourse, from 2017, admissions to the postgraduate and diploma programmes offered at the Goa Medical College (GMC) too will take place based on the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET).

The Goa government issued a notification last week amending the Goa (rules for admission to post-graduate degree and diploma courses of the Goa University at the Goa Medical College) Rules, 2004.

'The order of merit for admission to post-graduate degree/diploma courses shall be based on state-wise merit secured by the eligible applicants at NEET-PG examination for the concerned academic year,' states Rule 3 of the amended rules.

Until 2016, admissions to the postgraduate seats at GMC were being carried out based on final year MBBS scores of the students. Students have to face tough competition to bag seats at the institute.

As GMC is a state-run college, in 2016, Goa got the benefit of the central government ordinance, which exempted government medical colleges from carrying out admissions to the MBBS degree course through NEET. But Goa will be joining NEET for MBBS admissions from 2017.

MBBS admissions at GMC in 2016 were carried out based on the state's Common Entrance Test (CET) scores.
